Acadience Reading Pre-K: PELI: General Scoring Guidelines

Specific scoring rules are provided for each subtest in the chapters on administration and scoring for the subtests in the Acadience Reading Pre-K: PELI Assessment Manual. There are some general scoring rules that apply to all PELI subtests.

  • If the child changes an incorrect response to a correct one after you have already marked the response incorrect by slashing it, write the letter SC (for self-correct) beside the slash. On the PELI, the letters SC take away a slash. See examples of self-corrects for each subtest in the individual subtest chapters.
  • For all subtests other than Picture Naming, if the child changes a correct response to an incorrect response after you have already marked the response correct, mark a slash through the item on the score sheet. For all subtests other than Picture Naming, a slash overrides a mark for a correct response. On Picture Naming, if a child names an item correctly, the child receives credit for naming the picture, even if the picture is renamed incorrectly. See examples of changing a response to incorrect for each subtest in the individual subtest chapters.

Children are not penalized for pronunciation errors relating to developmental articulation delays, dialect differences, or speaking a first language other than English. As long as children’s responses are consistent with their typical speech patterns, score the item without penalty.

You will need to use your best judgment in making the determination about speech patterns. If you are familiar with the child you are assessing, you will likely be familiar with that child’s speech patterns. If you are unfamiliar with a child, it will be important to spend a little bit of time conversing with the child, so that you can detect any noticeable speech patterns as you are establishing rapport.
